This important and hitherto unpublished bust by Giuseppe Maria Mazza, signed and dated August 1678, was commissioned by Alessandro Fava, member of the important Bolognese family who commissioned to the Carracci brothers (about a hundred years before) the frieze for their family Palace in Bologna. It probably represents one of the two brothers Alessandro and Ludovico Fava, died young in 1571 and 1572 while fighting against the Turks.
