FRANCESCO RIGHETTI (Rome 1749 - Rome 1819)
Daedalus and Icarus (after Antonio Canova)
Description: This bronze. of immense interest because it is the only model known of Antonio Canova's first masterpiece in marble, is likely to date back to the 1790s when Righetti began to produce a series of bronze models of Canova's works – a series he was to continue to produce well into the next century. The bronze was modelled in Rome, most likely from the original plaster model which Canova took with him to the papal capital in 1779 in order to acquaint the city's artistic community with his talent as a sculptor.
