This painting is a version of a picture that Turpin de Crissé painted, together with a companion piece, in 1836 and sent as a gift to the Accademia in Venice, of which he had become an honorary member on 20 July of that year. Both works were displayed at an exhibition held to mark Emperor Ferdinand I's visit to Venice in 1838.
